Our extra-curricular highlights

Music
The music program at Queanbeyan West Public School continues to grow. In 2023 our P&C purchased a brand new piano and our choir has been going from strength to strength. There are opportunities for students to participate in band and to have experience with a range of instruments, including percussion and tuned instruments (using our class sets of recorders, guitars and ukuleles).

Performing arts
Students at Queanbeyan West Public School have the opportunity to participate in dance activities as part of their classroom learning. Extra-curricular dance programs are provided that give students the opportunity to perform at local, regional and state events. Years 4-6 students have the opportunity to participate in the Queanbeyan Schools' Performing Arts Festival and Years 3 - 6 may participate in Pulse Alive.
Years 5 & 6 students also have the opportunity to audition and attend the larger scale dance event; Schools Spectacular. Years 1-6 students have the opportunity to participate in weekly stage-based dance ensembles, performing at school events and Southern Tablelands Dance Festival.

Trips and excursions
Our students enjoy getting out of the classroom to explore, learn and try new things. These experiences help them grow, build confidence and see how their learning connects to the world.
Excursions are linked to learning in the classroom and may include visits to the theatre, War Memorial, Tidbinbilla and School Camps.

Debating and public speaking
Students can develop their thinking, communication and teamwork skills through debating and public speaking. They also have the chance to compete in local and state events.

Sports
Students may participate in competitive sport through the NSW Primary School Sports Association (PSSA). Schools participating are organised into zoned areas. The Queanbeyan District PSSA covers schools in the Queanbeyan district and surrounding areas. Sports include football, basketball, cricket, athletics and cross country.
Students also participate in sporting competitions offered by Canberra organisations, such as AFL Canberra and Raiders League Tag. Programs are also run by local organisations within the school for 3-6 sport sessions.
Each year we hold Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals at school or in the local area, sending qualifying students to District and Zone Carnivals.

Leadership
Leadership opportunities are available at a range of levels and commitments. There are opportunities through Student Representative Council, Sports House Captains, Peer Support leadership and of course School Captain, Vice Captain and Prefect opportunities in Year 6.

Lunchtime interest groups
Students have the opportunity to take part in crafts, chess club, music and environmental activities at lunchtimes and at other various times throughout the year.

Environmental Initiatives
There are many opportunities for students to learn about and be involved in environmental activities and initiatives in our school, in the classroom and wider community.
